DX Systems (Self-Contained & Split)

Direct expansion (DX) systems use circulated refrigerant gas

to cool or heat cabins. A self-contained system has all major

components on a single chassis. A split system puts the

condenser and evaporator at diﬀ erent locations connected by

insulated copper tubing, and two air handlers can be connected

to one condensing unit to cool multiple cabins or a single large

area. Self-contained systems can cool one or two cabins (with

additional duct work).

Chilled water systems

Installed in the engine room, the chiller circulates cold or hot

water in a closed circuit to all of the rooms to be air-conditioned.

Air handlers then cool or heat the individual cabins. Chiller sys-

tems are also well suited for very large boats or yachts with

many cabins. There is no limit to the number of air handlers that

can be integrated into the system.
